Speeding on I-81, I-690, and the Thruway

The interstates through Onondaga County produce more speeding tickets than anything else we see. Traffic coming off the Thruway onto I-690 or dropping south onto I-81 moves at highway speed into stretches where the posted limit falls, and the State Police work those transitions steadily. Points scale sharply with speed: 3 points for 1 to 10 mph over, 4 points for 11 to 20, 6 points for 21 to 30, and 11 points for more than 40 over, which is a suspension on one ticket. That is a heavy penalty for a first offense, and it puts a driver most of the way to the 6-point threshold on a single ticket. Which court will hear your Syracuse traffic ticket

Where your case goes depends entirely on where the officer wrote the ticket. A stop inside city limits sends you to Syracuse City Court downtown, near the Justice Center on South State Street. A stop a few minutes outside the line sends you to a town or village court instead, most often DeWitt, Salina, Cicero, Clay, Camillus, Geddes, Manlius, or Onondaga. Drivers ticketed on the Thruway or on I-81 north or south of the city can end up in courts in Lysander, Van Buren, or LaFayette without ever having entered those towns on purpose.

Every one of these courts belongs to the New York State Unified Court System, and they differ in ways that matter to your case. Some sit weekly and some monthly, which changes how long your ticket takes to resolve. Some prosecutors reduce speeding charges as a matter of routine and others do not. Reach 11 points within 24 months and the DMV may suspend your license outright. Underneath both of those, your insurer sees the conviction and prices it in, usually for three years, which for most drivers is the largest number in the whole equation.
